Who Can Apply


Critically and socially engaged artists, creatives, researchers, writers, educators, musicians, dancers, cooks, and practitioners of boundary-crossing fields, working through direct engagement. with Fujino's local community and landscape.

Cost


Flat fee ¥280,000 for 4 weeks (individual artist).
For duo and family members staying together, contact us. 

We Offer


Connections to local artists, craftspeople, and community; facilitated workshops, guided field trips, and participation in community activities; organizational and promotional support; tailored programming based on individual proposals.


Open Studio


The residency culminates in an Open Studios event to share work-in-progress with the local community. 
Format is flexible and agreed upon in advance.

Open to everyone for independent research and creative exploration. 

Dates


Dates and duration for Creative Stay are flexible, starting from 
1 week to 8 weeks or more during the winter and summer seasons.

We Offer


Creative Stay offers a minimalist structure within our MiSHŌ residency: a base for independent research, experimentation, project development, and contemplation, with an invitation to connect with the local environment on your own terms. It's suited for those who seek complete independence, without organizational support or coordination.
Fujino train station (12 min walk) connects directly to central Tokyo (60 min), offering access to the city while staying grounded in nature.

Open Studio


There are no public events or community obligations.

MiSHŌ Residency Program


Community Engagement & Creative Practice



We are inviting


MiSHŌ Residency welcomes critically and socially engaged artists, 
creatives, researchers, writers, educators, 
musicians, dancers, choreographers,
permaculture designers, farmers, cooks, 
practitioners working across disciplines.

We encourage context-responsive creative practices through direct engagement with Fujino’s local community and exploration of its unique cultural and natural landscape.
Work can be at any stage: from open-ended project and ongoing research to the development of an existing work or the early contemplation of a new one.

In the spirit of 実生(mishō), meaning “seedling,” we aim to nurture 
the emergence of new ideas, perspectives, and creative possibilities.

Application Schedule:


For Spring/Summer sessions(dates March–through September 15th): 
Apply by September 30, 2026.
We'll be in touch with selected candidates by October 12, 2026.

Autumn/Winter (dates from September 29th onwards):
The application end date is flexible. 
We'll review applications as they come in through March 2027.

    We Offer


    We support each artist by tailoring the program to meet the requirements of their individual proposal, and arranging activities and opportunities according to their interests, practice, and project.
     
    This may include:

    • Connections to local artists, craftspeople, growers, and members of the community, creating opportunities for collaboration and research.
    • Facilitation of workshops with local artisans, exploring indigenous practices, crafts, and culinary traditions using locally sourced materials.
    • Guided neighbourhood field trips, or route suggestions for independent exploration.
    • Opportunities to participate in seasonal and traditional community activities of satoyama stewardship.
    • Organizational and promotional assistance with artist-led residency events, such as performances, workshops, or exhibitions.
    • Local transportation when public transport is unavailable, as well as limited additional trips when required to achieve residency goals.

    These additional activities stay open to all residents,creating space 
    for shared, unexpected discoveries.


    Open  Studio


    The residency will culminate in an Open Studio event, offering residents an opportunity to share their work-in-progress with the local Fujino community. The format of this sharing is flexible and determined by the resident.
    Additional interactive contributions during the residency, such as workshops, performances, readings, or exhibitions, are welcomed but not required. Any such events should be discussed and agreed upon before the residency begins, to allow time for organization and promotion.

    MiSHŌ Creative Stay


    Exploration & Research



    Creative stay

     
    provides a minimalist framework of our MiSHŌ residency with an invitation to connect with the local environment without preconditions and obligations. 
    The main purpose of the Creative Stay is to be a base dedicated to 
    independent research, experimentation and contemplation. 
    It's best suited for people who prefer complete independence 
    and don't need organizational support or coordination.

    Fujino train station (12min walk) provides a direct connection to central Tokyo (60min), 
    making it an option for those who wish to have access to the city while maintaining a base in nature environment.  

    Creative stay is held during two seasons,
    winter and summer, 
    with a duration starting from 1 week.
    Longer stays may be prioritized.

    Winter : January 13 - March 17
    Summer: June 14 - August 16

    We accept applications on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
