Gediminas Šiaulys is an award-winning Lithuanian film director and visual artist. The first Lithuanian to win NYC's ADC Young Guns Award (2009), he is the only creator to earn all three top Lithuanian creative honors of Golden Stage Cross, Silver Crane and Golden Arrow across categories of theater, film, and advertising.

His work blends surrealism with subtle humor to explore themes of human identity and existential fragility. His films are characterized by a distinctive visual language that combines illustration, three-dimensional objects, and experimental animation techniques, where form becomes an integral part of storytelling.

Proposal

During the MiSHŌ residency, Gediminas plans to develop The Breathing of Things, a site-responsive video and sound installation exploring the relationship between nature, cultural memory, and the invisible presence of place. He aims to investigate how moving images interact with natural textures, movement, light, and decay. The project draws conceptual inspiration from Japanese Shinto beliefs surrounding kami and Baltic pre-Christian traditions of sacred nature, exploring their shared perception of the natural world as a living presence. Through environmental observation, conversations with the local community, and collaboration with a Japanese sound artist or composer, he hopes to create an immersive audiovisual experience shaped by Fujino’s landscape, sounds, and cultural context. The residency will culminate in an experimental installation prototype presented during Open Studios.

The residency was realized with the support of the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
